My Safety Tool
Victorian Legal Aid

Creating a self-help tool builder for the VLA website.

Background

VLA had recently built a new website, which was a huge step forward for their digital presence, however they needed a dynamic content framework to support users in distressing life and legal situations.

Challenge

The objective was to help users understand their legal situation and outline next steps, bridging the gap between legal jargon and the everyday person’s understanding.

It was also essential that the tool was able to be replicated for other legal scenarios in the future, whilst adhering to the Single Digital Presence (SDP) Design System.

Approach

While the extensive SDP Design System had a lot of useful components, I had to build out the new components required to meet people’s expectations of a decision-tree style guided pathway for complex issues.

I also developed an extensive decision tree with repeatable templates and an intuitive information architecture framework that could be used internally by VLA.

The resulting self-help tools are highly functional and accessible – providing users with a clear path to relevant, logical legal information.

Outcome

At its core, this project aimed to solve a profound problem: simplifying and demystifying legal information for individuals with no legal experience, especially for those facing family violence.
